Sector Overview
Data Sources & Methodology
This tracker aggregates data from multiple authoritative sources to provide a comprehensive view of corporate climate action:
Primary Data Sources (Priority Order)
- SEC 10-K Filings - Climate risk disclosures, capital expenditures (via SEC EDGAR API with accession numbers)
- Company Sustainability Reports - Annual reports published by each company (2024-2025)
- CDP (Carbon Disclosure Project) - Standardized environmental disclosures
- SBTi (Science Based Targets initiative) - Validated climate targets database
- RE100 - Renewable energy commitment tracking
- Climate Action 100+ - Investor engagement assessments
- IEA, MSCI ESG, Bloomberg ESG - Industry benchmarks and analysis
Data Conflict Resolution
When sources conflict, SEC filings take precedence (legally required disclosure) unless sustainability reports provide more granular breakdowns verified by third-party auditors.
Key Metrics Explained
- Progress % - Percentage of emissions reduction target achieved relative to target year
- Scope 1 - Direct emissions from owned/controlled sources
- Scope 2 - Indirect emissions from purchased energy
- Scope 3 - All other indirect emissions (supply chain, product use)
- Risk Level - Assessment based on progress vs. required trajectory
- SBTi Status - Science-Based Targets initiative validation status
Important Notes
- Financial sector "investments" often refer to sustainable finance commitments (loans, underwriting), not operational spending
- AI/data center growth is causing emissions increases for tech companies despite efficiency gains
- Oil & gas companies generally lack Scope 3 targets, which represent 80%+ of their total emissions
- Some companies report emissions increases due to acquisitions or improved measurement
